About

Weston Creek Little Athletics Centre (WCLAC), also known as the Redbacks, is affiliated with Capital Athletics. Our iconic spider logo is part of who we are — you’ll spot it on all our club shirts. We’ve been part of the local community for 50 years and were thrilled to have that contribution recognised with a Chief Minister's 2026 Canberra Gold Award.

We run our regular Saturday morning competitions at Chapman Oval (October - March), and we also offer weekly coaching clinics for athletes who want to build their skills. Throughout the year you’ll see special competitions and carnivals pop up as well. Several of our athletes have gone on to compete at national competitions.

We are a family-friendly, volunteer-run club, with parents and local community members chipping in to make every Saturday meet a great success.

Registration

Most athletes register at the beginning of each season, usually in August/September, however you are welcome to join at any time during the season. For more info:

The area we service

Children and families attend our club from many areas of Canberra, however are generally from the Weston Creek, Woden, or Molongolo suburban areas.

Redback GIft and Spiderback Gift

The Redback Gift is a 100m handicap race run by a finalist from each age group. The finalist and handicap based on the season best time or the fastest qualifying Gift heat time. There are separate boys and girls finals.

Each competitor in the Redback Gift final will start from a mark determined by handicap. As a result, the slower age group runners run a shorter distance, and the fastest age group runner is the back marker.

The Spiderback Gift is a handicap race with each age group starting time based on season best times for 200m (U6-8) and 800m (U9-17). There are two races (U6-8 200m; U9-17 800m). There are separate girls and boys finals. The Spiderback Gift will start from either the 200m or 800m start.

Club Captains

In the first month of competition, two club captains will be elected and hold office for a complete season. Club Captains will be appointed by vote and commence office immediately. Nominations for the position of club captain, Boy and Girl, will each be taken from the U13 and above age group with voting to be done by a show of hands from the U11 age group and above.
