Coaching

The Centre has several qualified coaches, accredited by the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association (ATFCA), available to assist children in the finer points of athletics.

The WCLAC Head coach is Peter Boden :  ATFCA Level 2 (Sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws & general priniciples)

Coaching sessions will be conducted at Chapman Oval on Wednesday afternoons, according to the Season Calendar. Coaching sessions run from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm. Attending coaching sessions is not obligatory, however your child will benefit by attending.

Parents will assist in supervising children undertaking drills set by the coaches. Coaching clinics and training programs will be considered for specialist areas.

Track and Field Coaching clinics

The ACT Branch of the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association is conducting a series of coaching clinics over the forthcoming months. These clinics will be conducted as follows and will from 10:00am to 12:00 midday:
30 August 2009 – Throws;
20 September 2009 – Sprints and Hurdles;
25 October 2009 – Horizontal Jumps;
29 November 2009 – Endurance including Steeplechase and walks;
Athletes will be charged $5.00 each per clinic, which includes entry to the AIS. Coaches are invited to come along with their athletes and participate in discussions with the lead coach on his/her coaching methods and processes. It is hoped that such an inter-active coaching clinic will assist other coaches to gain an insight into alternative coaching methods and processes.
Les Bottles, a Level 4 Throws coach will lead the coaching clinic on the 30th August. It is understood that for the 30th August, Les will focus on the Discus and Shot Put.
It is hoped to obtain the services of other top prominent coaches in the ACT for the follow-on clinics. Please note that in addition to the coaching clinics, Alan Bishop has made himself available prior to each of the High Noon Meet, to coach athletes how to use Starting Blocks. If the initial series is successful, the ACT Branch of the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association will plan a second series to include events not covered above.

Qualification of Officials

Members are the heartblood of the Weston Creek Redbacks, however Saturday competition and ACTLAA sponsored Carnivals are to some daunting when approached to undertake tasks such as judging events, starting races, timing races and measuring distances.

An opportunity now exists to take the fear out of such tasks by becoming a qualified Little Athletics 'D' Official. Qualification is obtained by completion of a questionnaire, the answers for which are available in the 'D' level Official's Guide found on the ACTLAA website or available upon request from the Centre. With a passmark of 75%, a ACTLAA laminated Official's card is supplied.

For further information contact the Redback Official's Coordinating Officer who is Peter Boden for season 2008-2009.
